NEW YORK, 30 January, 2012 – With 43 per cent of its people under 18 years old, Haiti has one of the youngest populations in the world. Yet the country’s young people continue to suffer from a lack of opportunities and remain vulnerable in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake.

Innovative programme brings pre-school education to the most vulnerable

NEW YORK, USA, 12 December 2011—Mohammad Azizul Islam, 28, is a trader in Chinipara, in the remote Rangpur region of Bangladesh. As a landless man, he has very few opportunities to make a living.

He wants his pre-school aged daughter, Akhimoni, to be educated and have a profession. Among his chief concerns is how he will pay for it.

At the moment, however, she is receiving an education. Once a week, she and another friend meet for classes that involve learning rhymes, counting and the alphabet.

NEWS NOTE

MOSCOW, 27 September 2011 – Some 1.1 million children with disabilities in Central and Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States are hidden away at home or in institutions. They are likely to be out of school and among those most vulnerable to neglect, abuse and exploitation, UNICEF said at a major conference which opened today.

UN Security Council adopts new resolution to protect schools and hospitals during conflict

UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake addresses the United Nations Security Council about Resolution 1998, which aims to protect schools and hospitals from armed attacks.

NEW YORK, 12 July 2011 – UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake has welcomed a United Nations Security Council resolution aimed at increasing efforts to protect schools and hospitals from armed attack.

“These horrific attacks are not only a violation of international and humanitarian law, they are a violation of our common humanity,” said Mr Lake. “Today, the Security Council has taken a major step toward ending the culture of impunity and protecting children at their most vulnerable.”
